Special Product Line is an Italian Contract Development & Manufacturing Organization (CDMO), a leading and forward-thinking company that produces non-sterile pharmaceuticals for third parties.

SPL needed to modernize and improve the thermal generation system at its production site by replacing the existing indirect steam generator with a thermal oil system. The goal was to optimize steam production and increase overall energy efficiency, while considering the integration of a cogeneration plant with a heat recovery boiler.

The proposed solution provided SPL with several significant benefits. First, the initial phase included installing a heat recovery steam generator with a secondary economizer, designed to maximize energy recovery from the cogeneration unit’s exhaust gases.

Following a reassessment of their operational needs, a direct-fired steam generator was also installed. This unit features high turndown and low emissions. Its dedicated economizer ensures an efficiency rate over 96%, particularly under loads greater than 50% of nominal capacity.

Overall, this solution enabled SPL to substantially improve production efficiency while meeting environmental emissions targets. The combination of a heat recovery steam generator and a direct-fired unit provided an integrated, efficient answer to the site’s specific needs — making the facility more sustainable and energy-efficient.
