Research and development at Cannon Bono

In the heat production sector, our R&D efforts combine leading expertise in heat exchange, combustion, and heat pump technology, all aimed at improving performance while minimizing environmental impact.

We are pioneering systems that significantly reduce NOx and CO2 emissions by incorporating “greenhouse gas–neutral fuels” such as hydrogen, bio and opportunity fuels.

We developed a hydrogen-powered boiler that completely eliminates CO2 emissions and can seamlessly transition from natural gas without compromising efficiency, reliability or safety, while aiming for quality at the best possible cost.

This achievement represents a major step forward in our commitment to supporting the energy transition and decarbonization of industrial processes.

Sustainable heating solutions

Energy efficiency and carbon reduction guide the development of our heating technologies. We engineer tailor-made systems that maximize thermal performance while supporting our customers’ sustainability targets. 

A key part of this evolution is continuously enhancing our patented HE Smart system. By further developing advanced heat-recovery solutions within our steam generators, we are able to improve performance while reducing operating costs.

Ongoing optimization makes HE Smart increasingly compact, efficient, and cost-effective—helping customers achieve higher energy savings and lower emissions without compromizing on productivity. We are also increasingly integrating AI and ML technologies to avoid costly unplanned downtime—ensuring smarter, more reliable operations.

Innovation drives us toward increasingly low-carbon solutions: from heat pumps to electric boilers, we are expanding our portfolio to help industries accelerate their transition toward clean and renewable energy.

Combustion systems & opportunity fuels

Our team continuously improves our standard burners used in our boilers while finding ways to make products more efficient, cost-effective, and compact. We design advanced combustion systems, including our proprietary in-house burners. 

We focus on opportunity fuels: industrial by-products that can be converted into energy as part of our commitment to efficiency and sustainability. Our burners can treat contaminated air by incinerating harmful compounds, ensuring cleaner industrial operations (e.g., deodorization).

By optimizing these systems, we aim to:

  • Reduce NOx and CO2 emissions
  • Develop solutions aligned with customer needs, ahead of industry benchmarks.

Our R&D activity is strengthened by a collaborative network of research institutions, technology partners, and universities. Together, we accelerate the development of sustainable, high-performance solutions that shape the future of industrial energy systems.

We push the boundaries of energy efficiency and sustainability, and we translate advanced research into practical, reliable, and high-performance products designed to meet the evolving needs of industries worldwide.

We work closely with leading academic and technological partners, including the Politecnico di Milano, to deepen research in energy efficiency and low-carbon technologies. Cannon Bono is also an active participant in the European PushToHeat project, focused on developing high-temperature industrial heat pumps that reduce fossil fuel consumption and support large-scale industrial decarbonization.

Beyond product design, our team supports the service department on an almost daily basis, particularly on non-standard and complex applications, supervising installation, execution, and commissioning to ensure seamless and efficient operation for our customers. We also support the sales team in handling complex or new requests, providing technical expertise to assess feasibility and guide solution development.
