US Pharma. SMR 600 recovery boiler for tuscan plant

Cannon Bono supported a US pharmaceutical company with a production facility in Tuscany by supplying an advanced recovery steam generator integrated into a high-efficiency cogeneration plant, delivering reliable thermal energy, enhanced energy performance, and long-term operational flexibility for pharmaceutical manufacturing.

A US pharma company: the client

The company is a US multinational pharmaceutical group with a strong industrial presence in Italy, active in the development and production of innovative, high–scientific-value therapies. It operates in the fields of biotechnology, chemistry, and genetic medicine, with the goal of addressing some of the most complex global healthcare challenges. The Italian production site plays a strategic role within the Group’s industrial network and is characterized by high standards of quality, safety, and energy efficiency, typical of a highly regulated sector.

The challenge

High energy efficiency and access to TEE incentives make cogeneration a particularly advantageous choice for energy-intensive companies, such as our pharmaceutical client with a production site in Tuscany. The client needed a cogeneration plant to meet their electrical demand and produce thermal energy for their production processes.

The solution

To meet this need, we collaborated with Co.stell S.r.l., a leading company in the cogeneration sector, as the EPC contractor. Co.stell conducted a study to analyze the plant’s electrical and thermal needs. The result is an optimized energy model based on an internal combustion engine of approximately 4300 kWel, integrated with a recovery steam generator and an absorption plant for producing refrigeration energy.

Specifically, our team proposed a technical solution capable of:

  • Maximizing heat recovery on the cogenerator
  • Providing a high degree of maintainability for the recovery generator
  • Ensuring a secure PLC control system

The supply includes the body of the outdoor installation recovery steam generator and a side extractable economizer capable of preheating the generator’s feed water.

To maximize energy recovery, a dedicated Water Jacket economizer with a wide fin spacing was sized.

Both smoke boxes of the cogenerator are equipped with hinged doors for maximum inspectability, and the generator is supplied with a pair of PSV (2 x 100%) mounted on a changeover valve.

Our supply

  • Steam production: up to 3200 kg/h
  • Nominal recovery power: >360 kW
  • Operator exemption up to 72h
  • Generator control system based on a Siemens S7-1500 Fail-Safe
